The Big Flutter:  The Grand National on Film

BBC North West, BBC2

Executive Producer: Glyn Middleton
Producer / Director: Will Rowson

For more than a hundred years the great drama of this spectacular race has been captured on film - today it’s watched by an estimated 600 million people worldwide.

This film explores how television coverage turned the National's greatest moments into some of the nation’s best-loved sporting stories. Featuring a wealth of film archive, including rarely seen footage of the 1911 race, The Big Flutter relives the moments that shaped a national institution.

Super-fans such as John Parrott and Claire Sweeney share their favourite memories and big day rituals, while national treasure Sir Peter O'Sullevan describes how he helped bring the drama in to people's homes.

We also hear from racing legends, Bob Champion, Ginger McCain, John Buckingham and Jenny Pitman, all of whom wrote themselves in to the history books and secured the Grand National’s reputation as the ‘People’s Race’.
