With sixteen new skyscrapers planned for the city centre, Leeds’ skyline will change dramatically in the next few years. In a city that has gone from being synonymous with the Peter Sutcliffe to being synonymous with Harvey Nichols, Linda Barker examines the changes Leeds has seen since her childhood, and the incredible changes that will soon see it transformed into a mini-Manhattan.
Alongside this, she travels to the city often seen as the poor relation – Bradford. With a development plan that has seen huge swathes of the city centre levelled, Bradford is determined to come out from Leeds’ shadow and thrive as a destination in its own right.
In this tale of two cities, Linda Barker examines the plans for both Leeds and Bradford, meets the people behind the restoration planned for Leeds City Centre, and discovers that some of the plans in both places are not popular with everyone.
