In cities across the country, bogus taxi drivers put hundreds of people’s lives in danger every week by driving them home unlicensed.
This award-winning programme investigates the dangers of using bogus taxi drivers in the Yorkshire area – and the difficulties faced by the authorities in monitoring and clamping down on unlicensed drivers.
Late on Friday and Saturday nights on the streets of Leeds, hundreds of people are trying to get home after a night out. After a few drinks, they’re often less concerned about who’s actually taking them home. Our undercover team showed how easy it is for anyone to pretend to be a taxi and pick up unsuspecting customers.
Using covert cameras the team also posed as customers, and discovered how easy it was for unlicensed drivers to pick up unwitting victims.
The film also told the stories of two young women who were assaulted by the men they thought were taxi drivers taking them home after a night out.
Who's Taking Your Daughter Home Tonight? won the ITV News 2004 Bronze Award for Current Affairs Programmes.
