David Bieber is often described as one of Britain’s most dangerous prisoners. On Boxing Day 2003 he murdered PC Ian Broadhurst. 34 year old Ian was the first police officer to be shot dead on the UK mainland for 10 years, and his death provoked huge media coverage and a massive man hunt.
But it wasn’t just in the UK where Bieber was being hunted. Half a world away in Florida he was wanted for the killing of a fellow body builder and of the attempted killing of a former girlfriend 8 years earlier.
Bieber had fled the US by assuming the identity of a dead child – Nathan Wayne Coleman. For 8 years he had been one of America’s Most Wanted criminals. Now he was one of Britain’s too, and he was plotting yet more elaborate ways to escape justice yet again.
Records show him emptying his bank accounts and buying travel tickets. But it was CCTV pictures that revealed Bieber’s most terrifying activities. When police broke into the rented lock up they’d been monitoring, they uncovered a deadly store of ammunition and bullet making equipment. The man hunt stepped up a gear.
After 6 days Bieber was finally tracked down hiding in a Gateshead hotel room. He was armed to the hilt and was found in possession of birth certificates, passport pictures and a list of names of people who had died – he was plotting yet another escape.
Killer on the Run tells the story of PC Broadhurst’s murder, the large scale manhunt that was launched to catch Bieber, and the trial that led to his eventual imprisonment in December 2004.
Almost four years later, escape is still at the forefront of Bieber’s mind, and in Killer on the Run, a former cell mate reveals an elaborate plan for Bieber to get his freedom back - a plan that includes helicopters, guns and even cosmetic surgery.
